O.J. Simpson Sister Passes

Carmelita Durio, O.J. Simpson's sister, died on Monday, April 2 in Sacramento hospital, according to the LA Times. Durio first showed signs of being ill when she collapsed in a Las Vegas courtroom when Simpson was convicted of robbery and kidnapping. She was believed to be in her early 60s although the cause of death has yet to be determined. Durio had been in the hospital for the last three weeks but was released. She returned only to fall into a coma and experience kidney failure. She is survived by her husband Charles and her sister Shirley Baker. --Essence

UNDER THE RADAR: Djimon and Kimora

Djimon Hounsou and Kimora Lee Simmons, who have been dating, reportedly enjoyed an "unofficial" wedding ceremony last summer in Africa, Hounsou's native Benin, Africa, according to the New York Daily News.

A source tells the publication, "She went whole hog with the African theme - there were African drums, a traditional ceremony with dancers... they even had a hut!"

Simmons' two daughters Ming and Aoki were at the ceremony. After, the couple enjoyed a romantic honeymoon in Paris, France.

However, the union cannot be legally recognized in the U.S. as Simmons' divorce was not finalized until January. The couple is reportedly planning a second ceremony in America later this year to make their marriage official. It seems fitting that the first full senior class of graduates at the University of California, Merced would have the nation's first lady as its commencement speaker.

The UC system's newest campus in Fresno managed to draw the attention of Michelle Obama after launching an all-out campaign - flooding her office with letters, emails, and even hundreds of Valentine's cards.

A southeastern Pennsylvania mushroom farm is recalling packages of enoki mushrooms because they may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause a potentially fatal illness.

Phillips Mushroom Farm of Kennett Square, Pa., said in a statement Sunday the enoki mushrooms have been distributed in the United States and Canada through retail and food service channels. They were packaged under various brand names and sold between Jan. 13 and 30.

The company says the mushrooms were packed in clear plastic bags with blue, green or red graphics panels, plastic tills wrapped with ilm or one pound bags for food service. --Continue

Jennifer Hudson Plans First Public Appearance/Passing of Eartha Kitt

Sultry singer and dynamic actress Eartha died today of Colon cancer.

The Tony, GRAMMY and Emmy award nominee is noted for a number of songs and her role as Catwoman in the 1960s television series “Batman.” More recently, she became a pop culture symbol for her role as a sexy cougar in the popular 1990’s flick, “Boomerang.”

A family friend, Andrew Freedman, told the Associated Press that Kitt was treated recently at Columbia Presbyterian in New York for complications related to her cancer.

Kitt was born in South Carolina to a 14-year-old mother but moved to New York at 8 years old to live with an aunt before becoming a world renowned performer, style icon and sex symbol. In the 1960s, she was blacklisted by the government for speaking up against the Vietnam War at a White House function.

A self-proclaimed “sex kitten,” she was also famous for her catlike purr and her rendition of “Santa Baby.”

Jennifer Hudson needs more time to mourn the loss of her mom, brother and nephew before heading back to work.

Last week it was reported that J. Hud was going to film the video for her single “If This Isn’t Love,” but now plans for the shoot have been scrapped, USmagazine.com reports.

“The video was set up before the tragedy and she felt like she should finish what she started, but she's realized that she's not ready to go back to work," a source told the site. "It's too early."

Our attempts to reach Jen’s management for comment have been unanswered.

Pop Winans Out of Hospital — Winans family patriarch and GRAMMY nominated artist David "Pop" Winans is now out of the hospital and on the road to recovery following multiple health issues, including two strokes. Winans was first admitted into Beaumont Hospital on Sept. 30 following a major stroke. He suffered the second and more severe stroke on Nov. 3 and wasn't expected to survive. Doctors are heralding Winans' recovery as a miracle and released the 74-year old singer on Nov. 18 where he is in rehabilitation.

Last Wednesday, Chris along with his wife Malaak, officially unveiled the renovated Salvation Army Bushwick Community Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Rocks partnered with Target, who made a $1 million donation to the Salvation Army to modernize 40 of its libraries throughout the country, including the home of Chris's childhood after school and summer program. "I played here as a kid after school. I played pool, basketball, foosball, I got beat up here a couple of times and I learned how to fight here too," deadpans Chris. Each time I watch him, I marvel at his talent and fortitude because it is true that his works get washed away with the tide and he does them again. He is certainly a witness for Jesus Christ as thousands of people, in the course of a day, view his work and watch as he crafts his treasures. May his message be viewed by all!

The latest entry on Fox’s résumé is the new VH1 reality competition show, “Glam God With Vivica A. Fox.” The eight-episode series debuts Aug. 21 at 10 p.m. EST. Fox serves as the show’s host, as 12 wannabe celebrity stylists compete for a $100,000 cash prize and a chance to be a star stylista.

I have a glam panel, and we took 12 stylists and we moved them into a beautiful loft in downtown Los Angeles. We gave them challenges for styling celebrities for red-carpet events. Season 1 of "Gone Country" housed Julio Iglesias, Jr. (Winner), Bobby Brown, Sisqo, Carnie Wilson, Maureen McCormick (played 'Marcia' in the Brady Bunch) and others.

Bobby Brown is returning to reality TV in August as he teams up with Maureen McCormick and Carnie Wilson for the CMT show Outsider's Inn, a spin-off of sorts from the first season of Gone Country in which the three reunite to run a bed and breakfast. McCormick has called the program "a mix of the Bob Newhart Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Simple Life and The Office." McCormick is the innkeeper, Carnie Wilson is the cook, and Brown - of course is the entertainment coordinator.

Katrina Documentary Headed To Theatres...

The Hurricane Katrina chronicle "Trouble the Water," winner of this year's Sundance Grand Jury documentary prize, has been picked up for U.S. distribution by Zeitgeist Films. Tia Lessin and Carl Deal's "Water" uses camcorder footage that aspiring rapper Kimberly Roberts and Scott Roberts shot before and during the New Orleans disaster. The film tracks the couple through the aftermath, taking a critical look at the government's response and media coverage. The film will receive an Oscar-qualifying run in Los Angeles and New York beginning August 22, followed by a gradual national rollout.

A movie is in the works! Don Cornelius said "...he has teamed up with Warner Bros. Pictures to develop a buddy comedy that he hopes will spawn multiple sequels.The project, currently called "Soul Train: The Movie," revolves around two male dancers on the show who get into "a lot of good stuff and some bad stuff as well," said Cornelius, who will serve as a producer. Be on the lookout for this project to hit theatres in 2009!
